Kamal - An ode to the genius

Was watchin Anbe Sivam (not zzzonu) for the 2nd time y'day....what a movie..what an actor....not that am in anyway competent to get into the finer aspects of film making or acting skills but as a (founder) member of the*dont-really-care-for-films-but-try-not-to-miss-out-on-kamal-movies* club, guess i can pitch in with a few thots of my own...

in one word, the man is nothin short of a genius...for the sheer courage to experiment n stand up for his convictions n not let tollywood-standards dictate terms, i salute him...be it the stubble-sporting-ever-romantic punnagai mannan, or the desi version of godfather (hey dont blame me..it vas mani's idea)- velu nayakar, or the loveable maami in avvai shanmugi or the madras lingo-speaking- bachelor- detesting-marriage in pammal vaaaa (thats puking btw) sambandam...(my personal favorite) or the inji-idupazhaga of devar magan..hes a performer of all sorts....
and how about the character balu in saagara sangamam or the one in swathi muthyam? personally, i dont like watching a *distorted* kamal on screen, given his good looks and my regarding movies solely as a means of *entertainment* ....despite such reservations, anbe sivam touched my soul and has had me lost in thots abt what i am as a person & what i represent...even in guna (thanks to the make up i;doubt if kamal could recognize himself ), he touched my heart with the innocent *enakku undaana kayam athu thannala aaridum....* dialogue..
unnal mudiyum thambi is another movie that i can go on n on abt but that would mean discussin another favorite film maker of mine - KB..so lets reserve that for later....
guess i would be doin grave injustice if i dont make a mention of the alltime-favorite of grad students (& i blv of even resident indians) - MMKR...this is vat i always have to say abt it - i doubt if there can be a more convincing potrayal of 4 look-alikes (no beards/glasses/no-nothing to distinguish one from another physically) coming together for a 30-min scene - and the viewer still being able to clearly identify each character....
ivent even got started with what i vanna say abt kamal and the blog is already rather lengthy..so guess i cannot rave abt his performances in hey ram/ kuruthi punal/mahanadi/ virumaandi/pesum padam/ 16 vayathinile / raja parvai/sathi leelavathi/tenali/apoorva sagodhargal/indian/nammavar.....
i do vanna mention abt his talents in singing though- anbe sivam, pottu vaitha kathal thittam, sundari neeyum, inji idupazhagi, muthe muthamma, thenpaandi cheemayile, kandasami madasami, kaasu mela, vikram... - my age is catching up with me and am unable to reel off songs off the top of my mind...:((
kamal as a dancer - i guess even a non-movie buff would know what kinda dedication it takes to come up with masterpieces such as saagara sangamam/punnagai mannan/kalaignan/sakala kala vallavan.....

be it acting, dancing.singing, speakin a local dialect or a different tongue altogether, learning new stunts/martial arts or aping street performers, or merely providing entertainment to his fans....kamal is a class of his own...i dont mean to sound cliched but guess its important to first believe in oneself to be able to achieve in life...& thats precisely what his life has to say.....sheer dedication and diligence has got him this far and as one of his ardent admirers, i sincerely wish that he achieves his dreams .......
its amazing how a 2.5-hour-long movie has touched me so much !
HATS OFF TO KAMAL......
